AGP Leaders Address Worker Discontent Ahead of Assam Elections

AGP Outreach Campaign in Jorhat

Jorhat, July 16: With the 2026 Assam Assembly elections on the horizon, unrest is becoming evident within the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), especially among its grassroots members in constituencies governed by the BJP.

A number of AGP activists have voiced their grievances, claiming they are not receiving the recognition and benefits they deserve, despite being part of the ruling coalition.

In response to these escalating issues, AGP President and Minister Atul Bora, along with Working President Keshab Mahanta, initiated an outreach program in Upper Assam aimed at connecting with party members and addressing their concerns.

During his visit to Jorhat on Tuesday, Minister Bora engaged in discussions with leaders from the Jorhat and Majuli district units, as well as representatives from allied organizations.

The meeting, held at the AGP district office, centered on the issues faced by grassroots members and strategizing for the upcoming elections.

After the meeting, Bora informed the media, “This outreach, which started in Jorhat, will also reach districts like Biswanath.”

When questioned about the dissatisfaction among party members, the Agriculture Minister likened the situation to familial disagreements.

“In any family, there can be tensions when one sibling feels less favored than another. This is similar; we are a family,” Bora remarked, minimizing the dissent.

He emphasized the necessity of "mutual respect and equal partnership" within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

“If all parties honor the principles of partnership, such issues would not arise,” he added.

Bora also mentioned that the AGP will gather information regarding the treatment of its members in BJP-led areas and vice versa, and will relay this to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita.

The AGP president confirmed that this consultative approach with grassroots members and party leaders will be ongoing across various districts.

Reflecting on his leadership, Bora stated, “I have served as AGP president for 11 years. I encourage all our members to view this party as a platform for service and to advance together in unity.”

He also motivated the younger members of the party, saying, “If the youth can fully engage and learn from our experiences, they will be well-prepared to contest future elections with confidence.”
